Allow attachments to patients' messages
Patients are not able to send documents via the messaging system. This would be great if they can send old charts, results they have, etc.
284 votesHi everyone – As of 11/17/17, patients are able to attach files and hyperlinks to messages that they send to their provider from within the patient portal. When received in the EHR, these files and hyperlinks can be saved as documents to attach to the patient chart.
For more information on handling patient message attachments, please see our Knowledge Base article here:

Mass message to groups of patients
Would be great to have the ability to send mass email/message to all patients or specified groups of patients. This would be helpful to inform them of vacations, acute changes in practice, location change, new services, etc.

Delete Patient Message
I inadvertently posted a personal message into a patient's chart and now am unable to remove it. It is not related to the patient's health history and should not be part of the permanent record, however there is no way to delete it.

Out of Office Response for Patient Messaging
Patients frequently use the Practice Fusion email function to email. I am out of the office next week, and there does not appear to be a way to enter an out of the office response. This is an essential patient care issue; patients will be emailing with a clinical question, and no one will be getting back to them.
I understand that I can temporarily disable patient messaging, but a simple Out of Office message would be helpful for my practice.

Attach files to messages
We would like to attach files to messages. For example, a voice mail or other external attachments to messages between PF users in the same practice.

Search Messages
Sometimes I have sent a message and it's been archived, but later I want to refer to it. It's hard to find past messages. I'd like a search feature.

Message Archiving Enhancement
Please individualize message archive to give time to others to see it. Now if one party archives it, the message no longer appears for everybody.
81 votesHi everyone – As of 2/14/2017, we have introduced a new Message setting to all practices that allows administrators to determine if group messages will be archived for all participants once the first user archives the message, or if the message can be archived for by each user individually.
You can read more about the updated Message settings here:

Allow non-recipients of a message to reply to a message about a patient
This issue arises if a staff member is out of the office and another staff member needs to address the issue. Sometimes one staff member begins to address an issue with a patient and writes a message, but another staff member follows up on it.
Now if a message was not sent to us, it is viewable in the patient's chart, but a new, separate message has to be created rather than keeping the particular issue on one email string.
There is the option to "send to entire practice," but that is cumbersome since it clutters everyone's inbox with messages…

Mark Messages as Unread
We would like to be able to mark messages as Unread, to keep them available for reading in the future.

Deleting messages
It would be nice to be able to delete messages. In our office we use the messaging a lot and for everything, and once an issue has been taken care of the only option to get the message out of an inbox is to Archive it for the entire office to view.

Send Messages to Multiple Patients
I really need to send emails to a group. When doctors go away or are going to be out for any reason, we don't want to swamp our coverage partners or create crises amongst our patients who didn't know we were out. We want to be able to give them notice and instructions on what to do. OR we want to tell them we have flu shots available OR we want to send an email explaining some new medical research that pertains to them. I need to be able to create an email and then simply go down my patient…

Instant messenger & Chat
We need to be able to communicate with each other while in the rooms without opening the Messaging area. Instant messenger or chat seems like a great solution to this need.

Mobile Messaging
I need to be able to get messages while not at the office. Either we need mobile phone access to PF (including messages); or we need some way to port (or forward) messages. It is essential that we can get clinical messages.

Forward (or CC) a patient message to staff
I frequently have to cut and paste messages which are sent to patient to staff to explain what to say to patients (to verify that patient's have seen labs and what to do). It would be much easier to forward or CC staff if that functionality is in our messaging.

Sound Signals when Messages are Sent and Received
We would like to have Sound signals fire when sending or receiving messages. Almost like instant messenger.

Larger Message Box
When sending messages it would be nice if the box was bigger so you could see the entire message that was sent to you & be able to refer back to it when formulating a response. Right now it is so small so I have to constantly stop typing and scroll down to see what was written & to make sure I've answered all questions. Thank you

Display patient's phone number while composing message
Voicemails from patients often include "please call me back at 222 333 4444" without the patient specifying whether that is their cell phone, office phone, etc. Usually the number they leave is the number I already have on their chart, but without opening the chart I can't be certain. So when I'm typing a message to a staff member, asking them to call the patient back, I have to type in the phone number the patient left.
When the staff member opens my message, PF automatically displays the phone number from the patient's chart. And then 95% of the time,…

Allow sending of a message from Documents
It would be great if we could send the patient a message from the document viewer, just as we can from the labs. That would entail many fewer clicks than having to open the chart and send the message, for instance conveying mammogram or other xray results which are still sent as documents in our area.
25 votesHi everyone. As of 6/26/2015, there is an Actions Menu in Documents where you can send a new message and create a new task. Thanks for your input here. Keep the ideas coming!
There is a new section in this Knowledge Base article that covers the Actions Menu addition: http://knowledgebase.practicefusion.com/knowledgebase/articles/483348

Provider Dropdown Organized By Role
Messaging drop down needs have the option to be organized by level of providers. Right now it is alphabetical but our providers would like the messaging list to begin with the MA's and then the RN's. It would speed up the process of typing a message if they did not have to scroll and find names.

Have the patient messaging screen show date of birth
If we go to send a message to a patient and we have more than one patient with the same name with active patient fusion accounts there is no way to figure out which name to select to send the message. DOB should be included in the list of names. The same is true when we receive a message from a patient. We cannot always know which patients chart it belongs to. Meaningful use requires us to utilize this system for a % of our patients
13 votesHi everyone – as of 8/29/17 you can now see a patient’s middle initial, date of birth, and sex when searching for a patient contact in a new message.
For more information about patient messaging, you can review our Knowledge Base article here: https://knowledgebase.practicefusion.com/knowledgebase/articles/483766-how-do-i-use-patient-messaging
