What is structured data or a structured result?

Structured data refers to data kept in database form rather than free form. It is data that is understood by other functions in the EHR, because it is built with a universal set of protocols. Structured data is built using information that is stored in fixed fields within a record or file. These fields can be referenced by other parts of the EHR, because they are in an organized format. This allows for drug interaction checks and reporting, for example.
