To discontinue a medication, first select the medication from the patient’s Summary tab or from within an existing encounter.
You may discontinue a medication by:
- Manually entering a stop date
- Clicking Today (Note: This will automatically set the stop date to that particular day)
- Selecting Discontinue Med
Please note that you will not be able to prescribe a medication with a stop date that is in the past or that is set as the same date on which you are trying to prescribe. However you may prescribe a medication if the stop date entered is a future date. If you discontinue a medication after the prescription has been sent electronically to the pharmacy, the information will not be transmitted to the pharmacy. For more information, please see: How do I send an e-prescription (eRx)?
If you select 'Allergic to medication' as the reason for discontinuation and click Done, you will automatically be prompted to enter that medication as a structured allergy.
How do I discontinue a duplicate medication?
You may see a duplicate therapy warning on the patient’s Summary and in their encounter under the Medication table and within the Plan section. This warning will display if you have multiples instances of the same medication (exact name, dose, route and form) recorded.
Select one of the duplicated medications. This will open a pane to the right that will display all the duplicate records. Click Discontinue to deactivate the duplicate medication.
